A Los Angeles jury has reached a $4.5 million verdict in a metal-on-metal hip implant lawsuit against Wright Medical Technology Inc. The verdict came in the first hip implant case to go to trial against Wright. The plaintiff received the medical device in 2007 but after experiencing extreme pain just three years later, was forced to endure a number of corrective surgeries.
Los Angeles Jury Finds that Wright Medical’s Profemur R Hip Implant Device Was Defectively Manufactured
The California jury found that Wright Medical’s Profemur R hip replacement system was defectively manufactured. Wright Medical has been sued in more than 1,000metal-on-metal hip implant lawsuits.
Most of the federal replacement hip lawsuits against Wright Medical have been coordinated for pretrial proceedings in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Many other lawsuits — most of which involve Wright Medical’s Conserve hip implant — have been coordinated in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. The first Conserve hip replacement lawsuit is reportedly scheduled for August.
Meanwhile, more than a dozen Profemur lawsuits have been filed in Shelby County, Tennessee, close to Wright Medical’s Memphis headquarters.
Though the hip implant lawsuits involve different medical devices, many of the witnesses are the same. Hip implant manufacturers are very likely viewing the large jury verdict with keen interest.
