A new mesothelioma treatment center has been launched at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. For decades, thousands of American workers were exposed to asbestos in Baltimore-area steel mills and shipyards. Asbestos exposure is the only established cause of pleural mesothelioma, a painful and aggressive cancer. Each year, 3,000 Americans are diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma Expert Joseph Friedberg, MD Named Director of New University of Maryland Treatment Center
The full name of the new treatment center is the University of Maryland School of Medicine Mesothelioma and Thoracic Oncology Treatment and Research Center. Doctors affiliated with the facility will treat mesothelioma patients as well as conduct research and education programs about this asbestos disease.
Dr. Joseph Friedberg, the Center’s Director, has been named the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Thoracic Surgeon-in-Chief for the University of Maryland Medical System. Dr. Friedberg is known worldwide for his advances in surgical treatment of pleural mesothelioma. Before moving to Baltimore, Dr. Friedberg headed up another comprehensive treatment program for pleural mesothelioma.
The center will also treat patients with peritoneal mesothelioma. Dr. H. Richard Alexander, a Professor of Surgery at the University’s medical school, will partner with Dr. Friedberg at the new mesothelioma treatment facility. Dr. Alexander has an international reputation for his treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma as well as other peritoneal cancers.
The mesothelioma center will evaluate and treat patients from around the globe. Each patient will be treated with a multidisciplinary approach by a team of professionals with differing specialties, including:
- clergy
- gastroenterology
- immunology
- integrative medicine
- medical oncology
- nutrition
- occupational medicine
- oncology nursing
- palliative care
- pathology
- physical therapy
- psychiatry
- pulmonary medicine
- radiation oncology
- radiology
- social work
- surgical oncology, and
- thoracic surgery.
All these professionals will gather together at weekly multidisciplinary conferences to decide upon the best treatment plan for each individual patient. The mesothelioma clinic will then set the treatment plan into motion.
