Today, We Salute Veterans Who are Still Sacrificing on Our Country’s Behalf

va qualified lawyers

Our military has served us well. Veterans today are all ages, from recent conflicts back to Korea and even World War II. We appreciate each and every one. But the ones we want to especially thank today are the vets who served pre-1980 that are fighting a whole new type of battle as we speak.

When US citizens took the brave step of fighting for our country, they expected to fight the enemy. They did not realize the enemy was to be found in a substance on the ship or military base where they were serving. Asbestos, a naturally occurring, fibrous material with a high heat resistance, was used extensively in military ships and bases built before 1980, even though it was known to be harmful. We now know asbestos exposure to be the only cause of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, often referred to as meso or asbestos cancer, is a rare and terminal cancer. Too many of our veterans, along with their families, who thought they were done with service, are facing this disease.

Thirty Percent of Mesothelioma Cases Diagnosed Annually are Military Veterans

Countless veterans from all branches of the armed forces were exposed to asbestos during their military service and because of the long latency period are just now being diagnosed with mesothelioma. For them, the war continues on. Veterans with a history of long-term or intensive asbestos exposure are particularly susceptible to this life-threatening cancer. When asbestos dust is inhaled, it forms deposits in the lungs that can develop into mesothelioma over time. It is the navy vets, unfortunately, that are most affected due to the tight quarters on ships.

Our Veteran Clients Are the Reason We Fight

Almost 50 percent of our clients are veterans. We have a wide range of experience and over 20 years of helping military families find recovery for expenses not covered by VA benefits. In fact, some of our staff and attorneys are veterans and have first-hand knowledge of the inner workings of the VA system.

You cannot work with those suffering from mesothelioma and their families and not be touched by their stories of struggle, hope, and sometimes bittersweet victory. These military families are our families and it is an honor to represent them.

Says attorney Leslie MacLean, “We have real empathy for our clients and the hardships they face. We know that a favorable verdict or settlement won’t bring back a loved one, but it can help the family keep the home they’ve always known and see the kids through college. That’s really what we’re fighting for—we can’t turn back the clock, but we can make it easier to look ahead.”
