A medical school professor in Australia has teamed up with other scientists to develop a new mesothelioma treatment that reportedly has saved one patient’s life. Dr Glen Reid, an associate professor at the University of Sydney Medical School hopes his ‘groundbreaking’ research can be used to treat the asbestos-related cancer on a widespread scale.
Mesothelioma Treatment Uses Nanotechnology and Guiding Antibodies
Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer whose only confirmed cause is asbestos exposure. Most patients live only a short time after diagnosis with the fatal disease.
As a lead researcher with Australia’s Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (ADRI), Dr. Reid is working in conjunction with a biotech company in Sydney, EnGenelC. The new treatment works by packing microRNA inside nanocells, which deliver the antibody-guided minicells to the tumor. The microRNA then attacks the tumor and stops its growth. The nanocell/microRNA combo is called TargomiRs.
In a Phase One clinical trial involving ten patients, the mesothelioma treatment was amazingly effective for one man whose tumor has almost disappeared. The results were not as remarkable for the other participants. Their mesothelioma either stabilized or continued to progress. Still, researchers are very encouraged by the results.
